Shawl - Checked Handloom Citrine
Description
Our new ultra-light checkered shawls are hand-loomed made by women in locals villages in West Bengal.
They are wonderfully oversized, measuring 35" wide x 80" long.
Each shawl is hand-spun on manual looms, each shawl is finished with hand-rolled fringes.
In West Bengal, fine cotton shawls are traditionally hand-loomed through a meticulous, skill-intensive process in which artisans prepare soft, combed cotton yarn, dye it with natural or low-impact colors, and wind it onto bobbins before weaving.
The loom—often a pit or frame loom set up in the artisan’s home (which is the case with these), requires precise foot and hand coordination to interlace the warp and weft threads, creating a light, breathable fabric with an even texture.
Patterns and borders are introduced manually using extra weft threads or small shuttles, and the weaver adjusts tension constantly to maintain uniformity.
After weaving, the shawl is washed and sun-dried.
These airy, delicate cotton shawls reflect regional tradition and individual craftsmanship West Bengal is known for.
